exploring the language and culture of
latin america
Greetings Everyone!
For those students who were a part of the Spanish classes last year, I am certain you know how thrilled I am to deliver this class. I absolutely LOVE the many cultures that make up the Spanish-speaking world. It is incredibly diverse, yet so connected. Exploring the cultures of Latin America makes one realize how different we are and at the same time how much we all have in common. Each student will indeed see a reflection of themselves as we study the cultures.
There are several goals for this class. We want students...
Please review the goals carefully because your grade will be based on these standards.
This course is going to be very exciting and interactive. When I think of culture, my thoughts include the language, food, traditions, the arts, holidays, history and so much more. We will not use a text book for this class, but you can prepare by reviewing the countries of Latin America and Spain and familiarizing yourself with the numerous cultures. I will stress the diversity of the cultures and the many faces one can find in each culture. I will break down stereotypes and you will emerge from this class with a different view of a Spanish-speaking person.
In addition to the history, we will become more knowledgeable about the current events in the Spanish-speaking world. Speaking the language is good; however, it is essential to know what is happening in the countries today. We are definitely a global society and we are affected by what occurs in other countries. If you have not already done so, you will be using Weebly at www.weebly.com to create your website. Each student will keep am electronic journal of current events. Weekly, you will find an article about one of the countries we will be studying, post it on your page, summarize it and write a brief reflection.
The cultures are rich and I am excited to share them with you. Everyday we will take a journey and I hope you are ready for the ride.
See you soon!

- To fully understand another culture, to develop an awareness of another people's way of life, of the patterns of behavior that order their world, and to become aware of the traditional ideas, attitudes, and perspectives that guide their behaviors.
- To respect and appreciate the diversity of their world. Students will learn about the contribution of other cultures to the world and the solutions they offer to problems confronting them. Awareness of these contributions helps students understand how their views and other people's views of the world have been influenced.
- To acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are available only through a language and its cultures.
- To gain insight into the nature of their own language and understand the power of word choice and to compare how different language systems express meaning and reflect culture.
- To understand themselves better and build an understanding of different responses to similar situations.
